- They're aloof with strangers: If you're the type of person who likes to have lots of friends over, lots of parties and wants your dog to be friendly with everyone who comes over and accept affection and play with strangers, this is not the dog for you! The reason behind this is that the Japanese Akita Inu is a primitive dog with a strong personality that was once used for personal protection. Therefore, it is naturally aloof with strangers.
- They tend to be aggressive towards other dogs: If you already have other dogs at home or are thinking of having several dogs together as a pack, this may not be the breed for you! The Japanese Akita Inu is a breed that was used for dog fighting and, although there are some exceptions, the general rule is that they tend to be aggressive towards dogs of the same size and sex, the Japanese Akita Inu will not submit to the dominance of another dog, sometimes not even dogs of the opposite sex.
- They are stubborn: If you want a dog that does exactly what you want and is easy to train, this is not the dog for you! The Japanese Akita Inu is an independent and very stubborn dog, it is very intelligent and will not obey you easily. You will need patience and a lot of leadership to deal with these dogs.
-Dog hair EVERYWHERE: The Japanese Akita Inu has a full, double coat that protects them from the cold as well as the heat, and because of this natural protection shaving is ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN for dogs of this breed ( unless it's for veterinary reasons ) and during the months of shedding the Japanese Akita Inu needs daily brushing and even then be prepared to pick up bags and bags of hair, hair goes everywhere, so if you like a clean house and aren't willing to deal with dog hair on your clothes, the kids, the sofa, the car and the backyard? this is not the dog for you!
- They're big dogs: big dogs require special care, they're heavy and without proper training can be much more difficult to deal with compared to a small dog. They need more space in the house, in the car, air travel can become much more difficult and expensive because of the size of the dog, so if this could be a problem for you... this isn't the right dog for you.
Why do I say that? Because the number one reason why many dogs are abandoned is because many first-time owners don't research the breed they are buying and end up unhappy or exposing their dog to situations that are doomed to failure. It's my duty as a breeder to inform new owners before they make the decision to get a Japanese Akita Inu, because the last thing I want is for my puppies to end up unhappy in their homes or cause problems in your family dynamics. That's why I advise every new owner to do their research before bringing a puppy home and make informed decisions.
