According to the official FCI standard, the breed known in the US as "Japanese Akitainu" is simply "Akita".

In 1999, the FCI officially divided the original Akita type into two separate breeds:

Akita (Japanese Akita Inu) — FCI Standard No. 255 (origin: Japan)

American Akita (Great Japanese Dog,known in the USA as "Akita") — FCI Standard No. 344
This distinction preserves the Japanese Akita’s ancient lineage and separates it from the more robust American Akita, which developed a different type through Western breeding lines.
AKC Standard
(American Kennel Club)
The American Kennel Club (AKC) is not a member of the FCI, which is the international governing body for pure-bred dogs. This separation means the two organizations have distinct breed standards and classifications.
The Japanese Akitainu under AKC classification
The Japanese Akitainu was first recognized by the AKC in 2020 when it was admited into the Foundation Stock Service (FSS). This was an important step towards its full recognition process.
Since January 1, 2023 the Japanese Akitainu has been placed in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class, which is one step closer to full recognition.
The Japanese Akita inu Club of America (JACA) is AKC breed parent club and all its members are ensuring proper breed education and representation and working side-by-side meticulously to the breed's full recognition.

UKC Standard
The UKC is an international registry and currently recognizes over 300 separate breeds. Each breed was developed for a specific purpose or function. These functions range from acting as a guardian of property and the home to working in the field with the hunter to just giving their owners endless hours of enjoyment as a companion.
The United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first breed registry in the United States to fully recognize the Japanese Akitainu breed.

The UKC classifies the Japanese Akitainu in the Northern Breed Group, as Japanese Akitainu.
The UKC breed parent club is JACUSA.
